What We Learned:

Holding Yourself Back

If you find yourself with a negative perspective, take a step back and ask yourself what is its source? Are you not feeling good about yourself? Maybe you are feeling a lack of confidence in your abilities? When you have negative feelings about something, it is easy to develop compensatory behaviours which result in reliance on others. The reality is, you don’t need to go through life relying on others. You are capable of learning the skills you need to achieve the life that you want. Many people have stories on why they are stuck in a particular situation, but there are always tools to better your circumstances, you just may not be in the place to find them right now out of fear. Brenda’s book is designed to help you find those tools, or you can even take it one step further and seek out a coach.

Feeling at Home With Yourself

Any mistake is not necessarily a bad thing, it is just a missed-take. We see mistakes as making us bad or incompetent, resulting in deprecating self-talk. In reality, we should view our mistakes as learning experiences, and then move on from them. It is important to understand that we all have good days and bad days. If we are constantly preoccupied with being perfect, we cannot be ‘at home’ with ourselves. Instead of focusing on whether your hair is “just right” or if your tie is straight, ask yourself how you can show people your wonderful personality.

Interacting With Other People

Sometimes, you will encounter “nasty” people, but that means that they are having inner turmoil; it is not a reflection of you. As Brenda says, if you squeeze a lemon, you can only get lemon juice from it. If someone else’s lemon juice is squirted at you, it doesn’t mean that you are a lemon as well.

Letting Go of Grudges

Just because someone throws a ball at you doesn’t mean you have to catch it. You have a choice: catch it or duck. People often hold grudges while failing to realize that the other person has already forgotten about the incident and moved on. If someone gave you their poison, would you drink it in hopes that they die? Of course not! So, you can’t let yourself be consumed with other people’s negativity. 

Combatting Overwhelm

We have to ask ourselves, why it is that we take on so many projects? What unfulfilled need do we have? Brenda recommends sharing your workload where possible and making sure to schedule “me time.” When we are overwhelmed, other people can feel that negative energy. It’s important to remember that you can’t give what you don’t have, and it is impossible to care for others if you don’t take care of yourself first.
